Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Insurance designed to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare.

What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement insurance — often called Medigap — is private insurance designed to help pay certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn't fully cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

A Medigap policy works alongside your Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) coverage. It helps with the cost-sharing that Original Medicare leaves to you. Medigap plans are different from Medicare Advantage — they supplement Original Medicare rather than replace it.

What to Consider

  • Medigap helps with Original Medicare cost-sharing, not replace it.
  • Plans are standardized and labeled by letter, but availability can differ.
  • Premiums and eligibility can vary; not every plan is available to every consumer.
  • Medigap and Medicare Advantage generally cannot be used together.
  • Availability and eligibility vary by state.

Important

Availability Varies by State

Medicare Supplement insurance is not available in every state under the same terms, and eligibility can differ. What's available depends on where you live and your individual situation.
